For Surgeons & Physicians

Facility partnership for visiting surgeons.

Downey Outpatient Surgery Center is built to fit your practice — streamlined credentialing, protected block time, modern ORs, and a staff that knows how to keep your day on schedule.

Credentialing

Our Medical Staff Office manages a straightforward credentialing process for physicians seeking facility privileges at DOSC. We support full credentialing for ongoing case volume and single-case/temporary privileges where appropriate.

What we need from you

  • Current CA medical license (verified via primary source)
  • DEA registration (if applicable to specialty)
  • Board certification documentation
  • Current CV and training history
  • Malpractice insurance — declarations page showing active coverage
  • Peer references (typically three)
  • NPDB self-query (within 180 days)
  • Immunization and health clearance documentation

Timeline

Most complete applications are reviewed by our Credentials Committee within 30–45 days of receiving all required documentation. Incomplete applications extend the timeline — our MSO staff will follow up proactively if anything is missing.

Re-credentialing

Privileges are reviewed on a standard two-year cycle. We send renewal packets approximately 120 days before expiration.

Block time & scheduling

Surgeons with consistent case volume can request protected block time — recurring OR blocks reserved for your practice. Block time lets your office build around a predictable surgical day instead of hunting for open rooms.

  • Dedicated blocks — half-day, full-day, or recurring weekly
  • Release-to-pool policy — unused blocks released in advance open up rooms for other surgeons
  • Add-on scheduling — open time available for one-off or urgent cases
  • Coordinator contact — a dedicated scheduling coordinator handles your office’s bookings directly

Facility & equipment

Our ORs are configured for the range of ambulatory surgical procedures that have moved safely out of the hospital. Specific capability varies by specialty — confirm with scheduling for the equipment you’ll need.

  • Operating rooms — fully equipped rooms with modern anesthesia machines, surgical lighting, and electrocautery
  • Imaging — fluoroscopy (C-arm), ultrasound guidance for interventional work
  • Video towers — HD arthroscopy and endoscopy platforms
  • Recovery — dedicated pre-op and Phase I / Phase II PACU bays staffed by experienced RNs
  • Sterile processing — on-site reprocessing with tracking
  • Pharmacy & anesthesia support — credentialed anesthesia providers available

Surgical staff

Every case at DOSC is supported by a team of experienced OR nurses, certified surgical technologists, and credentialed anesthesia providers. Our staff ratio is structured to support the outpatient case mix safely and efficiently, from pre-op through discharge.

Our Medical Director oversees clinical operations and is the point of contact for any case-level or facility concerns.

Ancillary & administrative support

  • Pre-op phone outreach to patients the day before surgery
  • Pathology routing to the lab of your preference
  • Dictation / note integration with your EMR workflow (paper or electronic)
  • Implant & vendor coordination for cases requiring specialty supplies
  • Billing & collections support — facility billing handled separately from professional billing; our office is happy to coordinate on insurance questions as needed

What the Credentialing and First-Case Onboarding Process Typically Looks Like

Surgeons who are new to ambulatory surgery centers sometimes find the onboarding timeline opaque, particularly if they have primarily operated in hospital settings. Here is a plain-English overview of what the process typically involves at a Joint Commission-accredited ASC like DOSC, from initial inquiry to first scheduled case.

Initial inquiry and facility review. Most surgeons start with a phone call or email to the Medical Staff Office to ask about case mix alignment, block availability, and whether the facility handles their specialty. This conversation is informal and takes about fifteen minutes. If there is a fit, credentialing paperwork is initiated.

Credentialing application. The application covers licensure, board certification, malpractice history, hospital privileges, and DEA registration. Most of the documents are the same ones used at any hospital credentialing. The Medical Staff Office will walk through exactly what is needed and follow up on any gaps so the packet moves cleanly through peer review.

Peer review and provisional privileges. Once the packet is complete, the Medical Director reviews it alongside the governing board. For straightforward applications, this step typically takes two to four weeks. Provisional privileges are granted for an initial period, during which the physician may begin scheduling cases.

First case scheduling. The Scheduling Office works with the surgeon’s team to identify available OR time. For surgeons without an established block, the initial cases are typically scheduled around available open time. Block time requests can be evaluated after a baseline case volume is established. The team is accustomed to coordinating with both solo practices and larger surgical groups.

  • What to bring for the first case: implant and vendor preferences (coordinated by our team in advance), any specific instrument preferences or tray cards, and a direct contact at your practice for day-of logistics
  • Anesthesia coordination: DOSC’s credentialed anesthesia providers handle pre-op assessment and anesthesia management; surgeons who prefer a specific anesthesiologist can request case-by-case coordination
  • Post-case documentation: operative note routing can be configured to match your existing EMR workflow or handled on paper, per preference

Questions that come up before the first case are expected and welcome. The Medical Staff Office is the single point of contact through the credentialing period and can route facility, scheduling, or billing questions to the right department. Reach out at [email protected] or call (562) 555-0100.
